What should you look for when choosing a video production company? This is a great question and I will answer it in a few simple points here:

1. Good Portfolio

Number one on this list is a good portfolio. By good, I mean you have to see something in their work that you really like. If you can’t see it then look elsewhere! Take the time to review their portfolio for at least 15 minutes.

2. Reputable Client List

A reputable client list is a sure indicator of other companies and brands out there who have come to know, trust and love a certain production company. The bigger the brand, the more they have on the line and it’s likely they have carefully selected a good company to maintain their brand image and reputation.

3. Friendly Producer

At a minimum, organise a phone meeting if time doesn’t allow for an in-person meeting. Write a question list and hit the producer with it. If they aren’t super friendly and giving, generous with their time and knowledgeable, it’s a sure indicator you will meet with some sort of resistance down the line. It’s a must, that you (the client) have a good connection with the producer as you will be having a fair bit of contact with them until your project is complete. Here are a few suggestions for questions to ask:

  • How long have you been working in film and television?
  • What experience do you have that's relevant to my project?
  • What differentiates your production company from others?
  • Can you tell me about some of your most successful productions?
  • What’s your production work flow?

4. Testimonials

Testimonials will certainly enhance your confidence during the qualifying stages. Take the time to read all the company’s testimonials. Ask yourself:

  • What’s the common thread among the testimonials?
  • What’s the company’s strengths?
  • Is this something I'm looking for?

Sometimes we can quickly gloss over the testimonial page but it’s well worth a good read. Take the process one step further and call the happy customers to find out what other benefits they received!

5. Heart!

Last, but not least, go with your heart. We’ve all had that experience of buying where prior to the transaction your gut tells you something is not right. Trust that instinct. I recently bought some goods over the internet, but prior to purchase I got a sense I shouldn’t buy it. Impatience got the better of me and I bought it anyway only to be quite disappointed, suffering a severe case of buyer’s remorse! Go with your heart!
